Chest of Drawers and Dressers with Room for Everything

Your chest of drawers gets opened and closed a few thousand times a year, usually before you are properly awake. That daily work is what separates a piece that lasts from one that starts to stick after two summers.

Early Settler has been furnishing Australian bedrooms since 1985, so we have a fair idea of what holds up. Our chest of drawers and dressers run from three drawers up to nine, in timber, painted finishes and hand-set bone inlay.

Whatever the finish, a chest of drawers is a freestanding unit of stacked drawers, usually waist height or taller, made to hold folded clothes. Bedroom drawers give you storage space you can take in at a glance, which is harder with hanging space.

What is the difference between drawers and dressers?

In Australia, “dresser” and “chest of drawers” mean the same piece, and people use both words interchangeably.

A tallboy, or tallboy dresser, is the tall narrow version, with drawers stacked higher rather than spread wide. A lowboy is the opposite, wider and lower, which turns the top into usable surface. A dressing table is something else again, a lower table with shallow drawers, a mirror and a stool, made for sitting at.

What size drawer unit should I choose?

Practical storage comes down to two things, the floor space you can give up and the number of drawers you need. A 3 drawer chest suits a small room or a spot beside the bed. Our 6-drawer dressers hold enough for two people, and the range runs up to nine.

Leave 60cm to 75cm clear in front so a drawer opens fully and you can stand at it. Every Early Settler product page carries full dimensions and carton dimensions, so you can check the carton clears your doorway before you order.

The build behind the finish

A wooden chest of drawers can be solid timber, engineered wood, or both. Our Melbourne design studio decides which goes where, based on what each part has to do.

Look past the finish and our range comes down to these materials:

  • Solid wood – Solid timber is milled from the log, so the surface sands back and refinishes years later.

  • Timber veneer – A thin layer of real timber over a stable core gives you real grain without the warping.
  • MDF – Pressed wood fibre is denser and smoother than particle board, so painted finishes sit flat.

  • Melamine board – A hard surface layer fused to a board core makes it the easiest to wipe clean.
  • Bone inlay – Hand-cut bone is set piece by piece into resin over a timber frame, so no two chests match.

Picking a colour that works with what you already own

Yes, a white chest of drawers works next to timber bedroom furniture. Painted and timber pieces have shared bedrooms for a century, and the mix only looks accidental when nothing else in the room picks up the white.

Five things settle most colour decisions:

  1. Undertone matters more than shade, so warm walnut sits better beside cream than beside a cold white.
  2. Your bed frame is the anchor, so choose drawers that agree with it rather than compete.
  3. Black and dove grey hold a small room together, because a dark block reads as one shape.
  4. Sage green and blush pink work best as the only colour doing the talking.
  5. Natural timber and light oak carry a mid-century look without help from anything else.

Still unsure? Our team is on chat and phone seven days a week, and you can talk it through in any of our 54 Australian stores.

Should I anchor a tallboy or chest of drawers to the wall?

Yes. Anchoring sits behind Australia's mandatory information standard for toppling furniture, which has applied to chests of drawers 686mm and taller since May 2025. A tall narrow chest tips more easily than a low wide one, because its weight sits higher.

Keep the television off the top. Every product page lists a weight limit for the surface, and a screen often passes it. TV units and entertainment units are built for that load, though the same standard covers them, so anchor those too.

Our product pages also show whether an anchor kit comes in the box. Renters can use anchors that leave only a small hole to fill.

Browse matching bedroom pieces at Early Settler

Drawers rarely arrive alone. Bedside tables are the obvious pair, bedheads set the tone at the other end of the room, and wardrobes take the hanging that drawers cannot. A table lamp and a decorative tray finish the surface on top. Single bed frames and the wider bedroom storage range sit alongside them.

Early Settler stocks furniture and homewares for every room. That covers a living space needing side tables, coffee tables, sideboards or floor lamps, and dining tables when you get that far.

Most people start with the drawers and the bed, then work outward from there.

FAQs

Is it better to have a wardrobe or a chest of drawers?

Most bedrooms need both, so the real question is what your clothes need. Hanging space suits coats, dresses and anything that creases. A chest of drawers wins on folded clothes and small items you want to see in one pull. If your wardrobe shelves are overflowing, Early Settler drawers are the fix.

Does a chest of drawers arrive assembled?

Most of our chests of drawers arrive fully assembled. There is no flat pack to build and no tools to hunt down. Each product page says whether assembly is needed, plus the carton size and weight. Early Settler teams can also assemble larger pieces in most metro areas.

How do I remove and fix a stuck drawer from a chest of drawers?

Empty the drawer, pull it out to the stop, then look for a small lever on each runner. Press one down and lift the other to release it. Sticking is usually a loose screw or swollen timber, so tighten the fixings and rub candle wax along wooden runners. Early Settler stocks Guardsman care products for timber upkeep.
