Ceiling Fans for Year-Round Comfort

Indoor or outdoor

Start with where the fan will go. Indoor ceiling fans suit bedrooms, living rooms and studies. Outdoor ceiling fans are rated for covered patios, verandahs and alfresco areas, where humidity and wind-blown rain would wear out an indoor fan. Some fans are rated for both, so check the product details if you'd like matching fans inside and out.

With or without a light

A ceiling fan with a light does two jobs from one fitting. That's useful in bedrooms and smaller rooms that only have one ceiling point. Some fans have an integrated LED light built in. Others take an optional light kit, which you can add at installation or leave off if you prefer a cleaner look. If you go without, lamps or pendant lights can light the room instead.

Size and ceiling height

Bigger rooms need a bigger blade span. Smaller fans suit compact bedrooms and studies, mid-sized fans cover most living rooms, and the largest fans are made for open-plan spaces. Ceiling height matters just as much. A hugger fan mounts close to a low ceiling, while high or raked ceilings may need a longer drop rod so the breeze reaches you.

Motors and controls

DC motors are now the standard choice for most ceiling fans. They typically run more quietly and use less power than older AC motors, and they usually come with a remote and more speed settings. Many also run in reverse. In winter, a slow reverse setting gently pushes warm air back down from the ceiling, so the fan stays useful all year.

Installation

Ceiling fans need to be installed by a licensed electrician. If you're replacing an existing fan or light, check the ceiling height and fixing point before you order. Take a look at our fan accessories for any extra parts you need.
