Making the Most of Your Kitchen Space
Kitchen islands and workbenches
A kitchen island adds bench space, storage and a casual place to eat. Leave about 1 metre around it so doors and drawers open freely and people can move past each other. If you’d like to sit at the island, check there’s enough overhang for knees and pair it with bar stools at the right height.
Extra storage
Freestanding kitchen storage is a simple fix when cupboards are full or a pantry is too small. Measure the space and check the depth so doors can open without blocking a walkway.
Sinks and tapware
Check the sink’s dimensions against your benchtop cut-out and cabinet before you buy, and make sure the tapware suits the number of tap holes. Installation should be done by a licensed plumber.
