Couches and Lounges for Every Living Room

Your couch has seen better days. The cushions sag, the armrest has a mystery stain nobody owns up to, and every movie night ends in a negotiation over the good corner. Sound familiar?

That’s where we come in. Early Settler’s sofa collection runs from one-seater to five-seater in leather or fabric, with fixed and modular builds, plus sofa beds for overnight guests. Picking between our sofas and lounges starts with your room size and ends with how you want to sit in it.

What’s the difference between a couch, a sofa and a lounge?

In Australia, couch, sofa, and lounge all describe the same piece of furniture, and most of us use the words interchangeably. The differences are small.

Sofa sounds a little more structured and tends to turn up in retail and design writing. Couch is the everyday word, the one you actually say at home. Lounge covers both the furniture and the room it sits in.

We use all three across our range. So if one piece is called a sofa and the next a lounge, that’s language, not a different product.

How do I choose the right sofa for my living room?

Start with the room, not the sofa. Measure your wall run and walking space first. Check doorways, stairwells and lifts against the carton size, not the finished piece.

Widths across our range, measured at the widest point:

  • 2-seater sofas run 143 to 234 cm, which suits a smaller living room.
  • 2.5-seaters sit at 175 to 203 cm, just above a 2-seater.
  • 3-seater sofas span 193 to 340 cm, and the 3.5-seater is 226 to 230 cm.
  • 4-seaters stretch 224 to 367 cm.
  • Chaise builds measure 244 cm as a 3-seater with reversible chaise, and 322 to 324 cm as a 4-seater.

Corner builds come in at 282 to 297 cm across five pieces.

Seat height sits around 46 cm on most pieces, including the 1-seater, and weight limits run 110 to 600 kg. Every product page lists full dimensions and carton size.

Modular couches for a home that changes

Modular couches suit a home that keeps changing. You build one from corner units, armless pieces, chaise sections and ottomans, then add or rearrange later. Our modular sofas work this way, and because one design view runs across our whole range, modular lounges sit with what you already own.

Fixed shapes work differently depending on your room:

  • Want the seating pointed one way? A chaise sofa or chaise lounge aims the seating at the television.
  • Need to zone an open-plan room? Corner sofas and sectional sofas mark out the living area without a wall.
  • Doors and windows on the wrong side? Reversible chaises swap sides, and a corner lounge can be built either way.
  • Floating the sofa away from the wall? A curved piece reads well from every angle.
  • After more comfort or a spare bed? A recliner sofa, electric recliner or fabric sofa bed covers it.

Leather, velvet or woven fabric couches

Pick your surface by how you live, not by which lasts longer. Leather and fabric carry the same cover, so the question is what you want to sit on.

Each surface behaves differently:

  • Our leather sofas wipe clean and mark into character, in top grain semi-aniline, top grain aniline or wax pull-up.
  • Chenille and woven fabric are the softest underhand and carry the widest colour choice.
  • Velvet reads more formally and shifts with the light through the day.
  • Bouclé and flat weave give texture rather than shine.

A fabric sofa suits daily use, while leather earns its place in a room you want to look settled. We design and source the range from our Melbourne studio, so the same frame comes in several finishes and the tones sit together.

How long should a couch last?

A couch should last at least five years, which is how long Early Settler covers the frame. Fabric and foam carry two years, and the frame decides the rest.

Ours are hardwood and plywood, in eucalyptus, pine and rubberwood, with legs in rubberwood, oak, walnut, beech or ash. Most pieces use zig-zag springs over webbing, and some use pocket springs. Feather and fibre blends suit a softer sink, while foam holds its shape longer.

Most of what wears a couch out early is easy to avoid. Direct sun fades upholstery, heat sources need a metre of clearance, and cushions that never get rotated wear unevenly.

Styling your couch with cushions, throws and rugs

Couch colour decides how much freedom you have afterwards. A neutral couch lets you change things around it, while a bolder one sets the tone. Ours run across neutrals, greys, greens, blues and browns, with mid-century shapes among them.

Layer cushions in mixed sizes and textures, drape a throw over one arm, and size the rug so the front legs sit on it. That anchors the seating instead of leaving it floating. Warm earthy tones lift a light couch while creams settle a grey sofa.

A couch rarely works alone. A coffee table and side tables give you somewhere to put things down, and an ottoman or armchairs fill what’s left.

What are the best ways to clean and maintain a fabric couch?

Vacuuming does more for a fabric couch than the occasional deep clean. Grit works its way into the weave and sets there, so run an upholstery brush over the seat, under the cushions and around the sides.

The rest of the routine takes minutes:

1. Rotate the cushions so wear spreads evenly instead of landing in one spot.

2. Blot spills straight away with a clean cloth, and never rub them in.

3. Skip household detergents, which mark fabric rather than lift the stain.

4. Book a professional for anything that needs more than a brush and a cloth.

Select collections have fully removable slipcovers and cushion covers, which makes the job simpler again. For everything else, our Guardsman care range covers fabric cleaners and protection kits.

Buying your couch from Early Settler

No photo tells you how a couch feels to sit in. That is what our stores are for.
Early Settler has furnished Australian homes since 1985, which is where the category knowledge comes from. Our sofa range is designed in our Melbourne studio, and our store teams talk  you through style and fit in person.

If the choice turns out wrong, returns go back to your nearest Early Settler store at shipping no cost. Our ranges run across sizes, so lounge suites and sofa sets come together from pieces that match. See the full furniture range at earlysettler.com.au, including outdoor furniture.

FAQs

How do you care for leather furniture to keep it looking its best?

Leather needs a wipe-down with a slightly damp cloth once a month, and a weekly dust with a dry white cloth. That keeps the surface soft. Lift spills with absorbent paper before the leather takes in any moisture, and skip chlorine or abrasive cleaners. Our full leather care guide covers conditioning.

What are the best materials for a pet-friendly couch?

Tight weaves and leather handle pets best. A flat weave or chenille gives claws less to catch on than a loose bouclé, and leather wipes down after muddy paws. Textured weaves in darker tones also disguise hair better than flat pale fabric.

Do Early Settler couches need assembly?

Yes, nearly all of them need assembly, and in most cases that means screwing the legs on. Each product page states the assembly type, so there’s no surprise when the box lands. A small number need no assembly at all.
