King Bed Frames Built for Room to Stretch Out

Sharing a queen works fine, right up until it doesn't. Someone starts sleeping diagonally, the dog claims the middle, and the extra width of a king size bed turns from a nice idea into the reason you both sleep through the night.

Early Settler king bed frames come in timber, fabric and metal, including four poster and canopy designs. We have been furnishing Australian bedrooms since 1985, which is why the range covers this much ground rather than settling on a single house style.

What size is a king bed frame in Australia?

An Australian king size mattress is 183 cm wide by 203 cm long. A king size bed frame always measures larger than that, and upholstered and four poster designs add more to the footprint than a slimline timber panel frame does. Check the external dimensions listed on the product page rather than working from the king size mattress size alone.

Length is where people get caught out. A king is exactly the same length as a queen, so every centimetre of the upgrade is width, which is also true of king bed bases.

How much bigger is a king bed than a queen?

A king is 30 cm wider than a queen and exactly the same length. That extra width goes to couples who share the bed with a pet or a child who wanders in at 3am, and to light sleepers who wake every time a partner rolls over. If either of those is you, go king. If neither is, queen bed frames will serve you better and leave more of the room free.

Those 30 cm come out of the floor either side. Numbers on a page settle none of this, though, so lie on both in one of our 54 Australian stores and you will know within a minute.

Can a king bed frame fit in a standard bedroom?

A room of around 3.6 m by 3.6 m fits a king with enough clearance to walk around it and still place bedside tables either side. Allow 60 to 75 cm of walkway on both sides and at the foot. Smaller master bedrooms can still work if the bed sits against a wall and only one side needs access.

Getting the frame into the room is the other half of it. Measure your doorways, hallway turns, stairwells and lift before you order, then check those against the carton dimensions we publish on every bed page alongside the assembled measurements. Our delivery and collection FAQs cover what to check.

What materials are commonly used for king bed frames?

King bed frames are made from four materials, and Early Settler carries all of them: timber, fabric, MDF and metal.

Four materials, four different jobs:

  • Timber – A timber bed brings warmth and weight, with reclaimed timber reading darker and lighter oak tones keeping a room open.
  • Fabric – Upholstered king bed frames give you a padded headboard to sit up against, and a boucle finish adds texture without bulk.
  • MDF – Engineered board holds a painted finish more evenly than solid timber, which suits clean white and light grey designs.
  • Metal – Slim metal frames take up the least visual space, so they suit smaller rooms.

Colours run to black, white, grey, green, blue, neutral and natural timber. Our Melbourne design studio develops these collections from concept through to finish, so the classic shapes hold together across materials.

How long should a king bed frame last?

A well-made king bed frame lasts a decade or more, and construction decides that more than the material does. Joinery and mechanical fixings outlast glue. Slat spacing and a centre rail with its own legs matter most across a 183 cm span, because a king loads a wider gap than any other bed base.

Slats loosen before anything cracks, so a squeak is the first warning you get. Upholstery wears at the contact points instead. That durability is backed by a 12 month warranty on every Early Settler bed, with care instructions on each product page.

Are storage king beds worth it?

Storage king beds are worth it if wardrobe space is tight. A king has the largest footprint in the house, so the area underneath is the biggest unused storage space in most bedrooms.

A gas lift storage bed lifts the whole platform on a strut, opening the full area underneath for spare bedding and seasonal items you reach for twice a year. Drawer beds put built-in drawers in the base instead, which slide out individually so nothing has to be lifted. Our king range carries both, so pick the one that matches how often you need to get in.

Skip a bed frame with storage if your wardrobe copes. A standard frame gives more height and style options, and a blanket box handles the overflow.

What affects the price of a king bed frame?

Material and how much of it goes in moves the price of a king bed frame more than anything else. Solid timber costs more than engineered board because there is simply more timber in it, and a king uses more of every material than any other size, which is why the same design costs more in king than in queen.

Four things do most of the work:

  1. Construction – Slat count and a properly supported centre rail add material and labour that a thinner base skips.
  2. Upholstery – Fabric weight and type separate upholstered designs from one another as much as the shape does.
  3. Mechanism – A built-in gas lift adds engineering that a plain frame does not carry.
  4. Finish – Solid timber takes more preparation and sealing than a painted board.

Early Settler sits deliberately between discount retailers and high-end boutiques. The aim is the best quality for the investment rather than the lowest number.

What to add once the bed is sorted

Something shifts when a king goes in. The bedside tables that looked right beside your old bed now sit 30 cm further apart and look small for it. Take that as permission to go bigger.

Everything after is the good part. A bedhead if the frame came without one, then a chest of drawers or a narrower tallboy depending on what the floor can spare. If yours is not a gas lift bed, bedroom storage picks up what the wardrobe cannot. Lay a plush rug wide enough to run past both sides, layer on pillows and throws, and add mattress protectors with the bed rather than after the first spill.

The spare room tends to follow. King single beds suit a growing kid, a double bed fits where a queen would crowd the walls, and sofa beds turn a study into somewhere guests can properly sleep. Sixteen categories and one design team, so your bedroom furniture holds together in a coastal or classic look, built at whatever pace suits you.

FAQs

Can a super king mattress fit a king bed frame?

No. A super king mattress is 203 cm wide against a king's 183 cm, so it would overhang by 10 cm on each side and sit unsupported at the edges. Super king mattresses need a super king frame. Early Settler king bed frames are built for a standard Australian king mattress.

What size doona do I need for a king bed?

An Australian king doona measures 245 cm by 210 cm, though some brands make theirs 240 cm wide. A queen doona at 210 cm square leaves almost no overhang on a king, so it ends up sliding towards whoever pulls hardest. Size up rather than down if you want an even drop on both sides.

Do I need a special mattress for a king bed frame?

No, any standard Australian king mattress at 183 cm by 203 cm will fit. Slat spacing matters more than the mattress type. Memory foam and latex need closely spaced slats to stop the mattress sagging between them, while innerspring is more forgiving of a wider gap.

How much weight can a king bed frame hold?

Weight limits vary by frame and are published on every Early Settler bed page alongside the dimensions. Check that figure rather than assuming, since it covers the mattress as well as the people on it, and a gas lift base has different loading to a fixed slat base.
