Better Bedrooms Begin with Early Settler Bed Frames
Bedrooms tend to get furnished backwards. The mattress arrives first, then a bedside table, then a rug, and the bed frame ends up chosen last, fitting itself around decisions the room has already made. Start with the frame and the rest follows easily.
Forty years of Australian bedrooms taught Early Settler that lesson early, which is why our range is built to be the first decision rather than the last, whether your bedroom leans classic or contemporary.
What is the difference between a bed frame and a bed base?
Bed frames are the full structure that holds your mattress, usually including the headboard, side rails and footboard. Bed bases are only the platform the mattress rests on, either slatted or upholstered, and they sit inside a frame or stand alone on legs.
Most people need one or the other, not both. Most of our frames include their own slat system, so a separate base is not required. If you prefer the ensemble look, our bed bases are the simpler option.
What are the standard sizes for bed frames?
Australian bed frame sizes follow five standard footprints: single, king single, double, queen and king. Each matches a fixed mattress size, though the frame itself always measures larger than the mattress it holds.
Match the frame to the mattress you already own, or the one you plan to buy:
-
Single bed frames – Fit a 920mm by 1880mm mattress and suit a child's room, a small guest room or a rental where floor space is tight.
-
King single bed frames – Fit a 1070mm by 2030mm mattress and give taller sleepers 150mm more length than a single.
-
Double bed frames – Fit a 1370mm by 1880mm mattress and work for one adult who likes room to spread out.
-
Queen bed frames – Fit a 1530mm by 2030mm mattress and are the most common choice for a main bedroom.
- King bed frames – Fit a 1830mm by 2030mm mattress and need a room of roughly 3.5 by 3.5 metres to sit comfortably.
Check the external dimensions on any product page before ordering, since a four-poster or a storage frame needs more clearance around it than a plain timber frame.
Which bed frame material suits your bedroom?
Timber is the material to choose for a main bedroom you want to keep for years, while fabric suits a room where softness matters more than presence. Both hold their look far longer than the trend that put them there.
Four materials do most of the work across our range:
-
Timber – Our timber bed frames come in solid timber, oak veneer, mango wood, reclaimed timber and recycled pine among others, so no two wooden bed frame designs carry the same grain or weight.
-
Fabric – Upholstered bed frames soften a room the moment they go in, and a fabric bed in one of our boucle finishes adds texture without adding visual bulk.
-
Iron – Slim iron and metal frames take up the least visual space in a room, which makes them the easiest choice for a small bedroom.
-
Leather – Leather frames give a bedroom a darker, more furnished feel and wipe clean more easily than woven upholstery.
Colours run to eleven options across the range, including natural timber, neutrals, green, amber and red, and many designs come in more than one finish. Some frames combine materials, pairing an oak headboard rail with pine legs or an MDF side rail, so the specification on each product page is worth reading before you decide.
Bed frames with storage and low-profile designs
Two builds turn a bed into storage. A bed frame with storage puts drawers in the base for linen and folded clothing you reach for weekly. A gas lift storage bed frame lifts the whole platform on a strut instead, opening the full footprint underneath for the things that come out twice a year.
Storage mechanisms are the first thing to fail on a poorly made bed. Ours are designed from the start by our Melbourne studio rather than added to a frame that was drawn without them. Low-profile frames sit lower than a standard frame and suit a room with a low window line, while daybeds with a trundle use that same under-bed space to sleep a second person.
How do I choose the right bed frame?
Start with how the room gets used, then narrow by look. A guest room and a main bedroom ask completely different things of the same piece of furniture, even at the same size.
Four checks will settle most decisions:
- Think about the room's purpose, because a spare room or rental gets by with a lighter single or king single while a main bedroom can carry the weight of a four-poster.
- Decide which wall the bed sits against, since that determines how much floor is left for the rest of the room.
- Decide which wall the bed sits against before anything else, as that determines how much floor is left for the rest of the room.
- Check your stairwell, hallway and doorways for access, because a king-sized bed often arrives in more than one carton.
Any shortlist is worth taking into one of our 54 Australian stores. A photograph cannot tell you whether a bedhead sits right behind your shoulders.
Why some bed frames outlast others
Joinery decides a frame's lifespan, not the material name on the label. Solid wood lasts because of how the side rails meet the headboard, and any queen or king needs a centre rail with its own legs underneath. Slats loosen before anything cracks, which is why a squeak is the first warning rather than the last.
Classic timber shapes wear their age well, and a mark in the grain reads as character rather than damage. Upholstery is the exception and wears at the contact points, so check what each frame is covered for on its product page.
Building the rest of the bedroom
The frame sets the height and the timber tone that everything else in the room has to answer to, which is why buying it first makes the rest of the bedroom furniture straightforward.
Match your bedside tables to the frame height first, then work out whether the floor suits a chest of drawers or dresser or a narrower tallboy. A wardrobe fills the gap in a room with no built-in, and a blanket box closes the foot of the bed. Layer a rug that runs past both sides, then finish with bedside lamps, sheets, pillows and throws.
Sixteen categories, one design team, and a coastal or classic look that holds together across the whole house. That is how a bedroom suite comes together without ever being bought as one, and joining Home Club costs nothing if you are furnishing yours a piece at a time (terms apply).
FAQs
How do I clean an upholstered bed frame?
Vacuum the fabric fortnightly with an upholstery attachment, paying attention to the seams and the top rail where hair oil collects. Blot spills immediately with a damp cloth rather than rubbing, and test any cleaning product on a hidden section first. Our bedroom care products are matched to the fabrics we use, so nothing strips the finish.
Do bed frames need to be secured to the wall?
No. Bed frames sit low and wide, so they carry none of the tip-over risk of a tallboy or bookcase. A freestanding bedhead mounted separately is the exception and should be fixed to the wall studs. Assembly guides on our product pages list the fixings supplied with each Early Settler frame.
Can you attach a bedhead to a bed frame?
Usually not. Most bed frames already include a bedhead as part of the structure, with the side rails bolting straight into it. Standalone bedheads are designed to sit against a wall behind an existing base instead. Check the bedhead collection at Early Settler if you are working with a base you already own.
What is a four-poster bed?
A four-poster bed is a frame with a vertical post at each corner, sometimes joined overhead by a canopy rail. The posts frame the bed without enclosing it, which gives a bedroom height and structure. Our four-posters run across timbers, including reclaimed and mango wood, in queen and king, with canopy curtains sold separately
