How to Choose a Timber Vanity

What to expect from natural timber

Real timber varies from piece to piece. Grain, knots and colour shift across every board, and that's even more noticeable in reclaimed timber, which has already had a life before becoming a vanity. Many of our timber vanities are made from teak or reclaimed teak, with finishes that range from natural timber to darker washed and lacquered looks. If you need two pieces to match exactly, timber won't give you that. If you like a bathroom with some character, the variation is a big part of the appeal.

Stone-top package or timber top

The biggest practical decision is what sits on top. Some timber vanities come as a complete package, with a stone top and undermount basin already matched to the cabinet and a tap hole pre-drilled. Others have a timber top with no basin or tap holes, so you choose a basin to suit and decide where the tap goes. That gives you more say in the finished look. It also means tap holes need to be drilled on site, or you can plan around a wall-mounted mixer instead.

Sizing for your bathroom

Measure the wall you're working with, then allow room for the door to swing and drawers to open fully. Single vanities suit ensuites, powder rooms and smaller main bathrooms. If two people get ready at the same time, a double vanity with two basins at around 1500mm wide makes busy mornings easier. You can also compare painted and stone-top styles across our full range of bathroom vanities.

Looking after timber in a bathroom

Timber is a natural material, so it responds to the water and humidity that come with any bathroom. Wipe up splashes and pooled water around the basin rather than leaving them to sit, and run the exhaust fan or open a window after a shower to keep moisture down. A soft cloth and a mild cleaner are kinder to the finish than harsh chemicals or scourers. Timber can also lose some of its natural oils over time, so check the care advice for your vanity before you start.

Finishing the look

A timber vanity gives you a warm base to build the rest of the room around. Brushed brass and matte black tapware both sit comfortably against wood tones. When choosing from our bathroom mirrors, a mirror slightly narrower than the vanity usually looks the most balanced above it.
