How to Decorate With Burgundy

Burgundy is easier to live with than a bright red. It sits closer to brown and plum, so it works with the timber floors, creams and soft neutrals already in many homes.

Start with smaller pieces

If you're new to the colour, begin small. A couple of cushions on a neutral sofa, a table lamp on a side table or a framed print is enough to see how the shade looks in your room. Deep red can look quite different in morning sun than under lamplight at night, so live with it for a week or two before you commit to anything bigger.

Add one statement piece

Once you know you like it, a larger piece can anchor the room. A display cabinet, an occasional chair or a dining table in a deep tone gives the eye somewhere to settle, and everything around it can stay quiet. One strong piece usually looks more deliberate than several competing for attention.

What goes with burgundy

Warm timber, cream, natural linen and soft pink all sit comfortably beside burgundy. Olive and muted greens make a richer contrast, and black gives the look a moodier edge. If you'd rather bring colour in at floor level, a deep red washable rug or runner is a practical place to start, especially in a hallway or dining area.

The colour isn't limited to the living room either. It feels warm and welcoming in a dining space, and outdoor cushions let you carry the same tones onto the deck or patio.
